Accessible Documents Initiative

Get help with a document.

If you have a document you cannot read because of a disability, we will make it accessible for you. This service is free.

This is for students with print disabilities. That includes blindness, low vision, learning disabilities such as dyslexia, and intellectual disabilities. If you use a screen reader, magnifier, or other assistive tool to read, this service is for you.

How it works

Three steps. No complicated forms. No cost to you.

1Send us your document

Create a free account on our portal and upload your document.

You can also email your document to deepa@equitabledocs.org or send it to our WhatsApp group (coming soon).

We accept PDF, Word, and PowerPoint files. Scanned documents are fine too.

2We make it accessible

Our tools and a trained reviewer check and fix the document so it works with screen readers and other assistive tools.

We fix the reading order, add headings, describe images, mark up tables, and handle equations.

Standard documents: 5 to 7 business days STEM documents: up to 10 business days

3We send it back to you

We email you when your document is ready.

Download it from your account. If you emailed or sent it via WhatsApp, we send it back the same way.

What we can fix

We work with most academic document types. Here is what we accept and what you get back.

  • Documents we accept

    • PDF files (including scanned pages).
    • Word documents (.doc, .docx).
    • PowerPoint presentations (.ppt, .pptx).
    • Documents in English, Hindi, and other Indian languages.
  • What you get back

    • Accessible PDF. Works with screen readers.
    • Word document with accessible formatting.
    • EPUB for reading on phones and tablets.
    • HTML, the best option for maths and equations.

You can choose your preferred format when you upload. If unsure, we will give you an accessible PDF.

  • Two types of accessible output

    • Screen reader accessible. For persons with blindness and low vision. Correct reading order, headings, image descriptions, table structure.
    • Easy Read. For persons with learning disabilities and intellectual disabilities. Simplified language, clear layout, illustrations.

You can request one or both. Just tell us what you need.

What we need from you

To do the best job, it helps to know a few things when you send your document.

When you send your document

  • Which pages need to be made accessible (all of it, or specific pages)?
  • Do you need screen reader accessible, Easy Read, or both?
  • Which format do you want back (PDF, Word, EPUB, HTML)?
  • Your institution name, if relevant. This helps us track which universities need support.

If you are not sure about any of this, just send the document. We will figure it out.

Your privacy

Your documents are processed on our servers only. We do not share them with anyone.

We store your document for 90 days so you can download it. After 90 days, we delete it.

Your documents are only seen by the people reviewing them.

Common questions

How long does it take?

Standard documents take 5 to 7 business days. Documents with equations or complex tables take up to 10 business days. We email you when your document is ready.

Is it really free?

Yes. There is no cost to students. The Accessible Documents Initiative is a non-profit initiative. There is no charge, no hidden fees, and no conditions.

What if my document is not in English?

We support Hindi and many other Indian languages. Our tools can process documents in over 100 languages. If your language is not supported, we will tell you honestly rather than deliver poor quality.

What about equations and maths?

We handle equations. Each equation gets a plain-language description (what screen readers read aloud) and MathML markup (for braille displays). For the best experience with maths, request the HTML format. It uses MathJax, which works well with screen readers.

Can my university send documents in bulk?

Yes. We work with universities to process documents at scale, train their staff, and set up their own accessibility pipelines. Learn about university partnerships.
